Mega Giga What Are These Terms And Why Should I Care

Writen by Deborah Baird

If you're asking this question, then undoubtedly you are new to the computer 'world'! Just a basic understanding of these terms and those related to it will give you a better understanding of your computer and how to use it best.

Mega and Giga, quite simply, are two terms of measurement for computers. They are, like miles and horsepower, measurements that help to understand the workings of your computer. If you know that MPH stands for Miles Per Hour then you can read your gauge in your car and know that at 35 MPH it will take you one hour to travel that distance.

Well, that's easy, you say, everyone knows that! Well, everyone who drives a car that is! Ask a 10-year-old child (who isn't into racing games!) what MPH means and you won't get a proper answer.

So, let's explain these computer terms to you.

Mega and Giga are commonly paired with another term called Byte. A Byte is the smallest unit of storage in a computer and is equivalent to a piece of text like the letter "A". There is actually a term that was used prior to these terms called Kilo, which means 1 thousand (1000) bytes. That used to be the measurement for both memory and storage for very old (in computer years) computers from the early to mid 1990's!

Now, memory for a computer is usually measured in MegaBytes, or 1 Million bytes, so that a computer that has 512 MegaBytes of memory has 512 Million bytes of memory capacity, better seen as 512,000,000 (approximately). But, even that is rapidly becoming an obsolete term as more and more computers are now being shipped with double that amount or approximately 1 Billion Bytes or 1 GigaByte.

Are you following the line of reasoning so far? Let's see … Mega equals Million (approximately) and Giga equals Billion (approximately). Now, why am I saying approximately? Well, it's because, once you get over a certain level in numbers, the exact number becomes irrelevant. Kilo for example actually refers to 1024 Bytes, but it became easier to refer to it as 1 thousand. And Mega actually refers to 1,024,000 bytes. So, don't concern yourselves with actual numbers, just be glad that we have word terms to refer to these huge amounts of storage!

So, what does this mean to you? Well, when you take a look at your System Information (through Control Panel) you'll be able to understand what the numbers there mean. For example, going to my computer info I can see that I have 512 MB (short for MegaBytes) of RAM (memory) which is a good amount of memory for running most programs. I can go to my 'My Computer' icon and open it up to see my drives and folders and right click on my Hard Drive to get a visual and numerical view of how much my hard drive has stored and how much I can still put on it. Currently, I have 59.7 GB (GigaBytes) of storage left on my hard drive, which started out as an 80 GB hard drive. Plenty of room to do just about anything I want!

By the way, the exact number of free space on my computer is 59,698,987,008 bytes … so, isn't it so much easier and quicker to say 59.7 GB? I think so! And I hope that you do too, now that you know a little bit more about this topic!

Bootleg Movie Downloads

Writen by Kristy Annely

Bootleg movie downloads are a major scourge in the world of entertainment and are an offshoot of the digital makeover associated with the movie industry. One of the disturbing facts is that it has generated lucrative, novel businesses including movie DVDs and downloadable music. In other words, digital technology has opened up an unknown scope for bootlegging by unscrupulous players in the field.

The harm that has been done by bootleg movie downloads is unprecedented. Records indicate that disc and tape forgery accounts for a sizeable loss in revenue. An area of grave concern is that illegal copies of movies are flooding the internet. Bootleg downloads have hit the entertainment industry hard. It has encouraged commercial piracy to a great extent, and it has come as a great blow to creative ideas and views.

The United States entertainment industry is worried that there has been a steady growth of disc bootlegging. The ambiguous system that facilitates entry of bootleg movies to the market is complex. It is lucrative as well. Commercial pirates earn huge amounts through this nepharious process. In the absence of strict laws, the risk involved is minimal allowing bootleggers to pocket thousands of dollars a week.

Bootlegged movies move globally with the aid of an intricate and surreptitious channe1. First, a movie is clandestinely recorded with a camcorder while up for public viewing in a theater. The recording is then transferred to a computer and placed online, The master copy is handed over to a manufacturer either in the form of a DVD or electronically. The manufacturer makes copies from the discs that are made available for a fee to a network of distributors. These distributors sell them to teams of peddlers.

How can you compare mp3 players to be sure you're getting the best features and price? You've checked some mp3 player ratings, and they're helpful. But iPod reviews and ratings don't answer all your questions. So how do you decide?

Here's a great little checklist for your player comparison. Use these criteria to compare players and you'll have no problem choosing the right one. Simply rate each mp3 player you're comparing by assigning a value of 1-10 to each of the six criteria. Total the points and voilá, your own custom mp3 player reviews. Portable Mp3 Players

Writen by Marian Krajcovic

Have you ever seen someone jogging or sitting on the bus with a portable mp3 player listening to music? It may be that you have seen a lot of people with these and you would love to join in with the trend as well.

MP3 players have evolved quite a bit since they were first released and now they have more advanced options compared to their predecessors. There are so many different mp3 players out on the market that it often makes for a hard decision when it comes to purchasing one.

What is the Best MP3 Player?

To define something as the best, it would basically depend on each different individual's needs. Some mp3 players have different features and advantages over others and the price may also determine a person's decision.

If you look at two different types of mp3 players, starting with the iPod or the Nomad, these offer the user a brilliant playback feature and they also offer digital recording capabilities to really maximize the experience.

Now let us compare those two to another mp3 player such as the Sonic blue that offers great durability and shake free music, which means there is no interference. In these comparisons, you can see the different strengths for all three mp3 players, so when you choose one, it is a matter of weighing up the positives and negatives compared to your individual needs.

The features have improved so much in the latest mp3 players and their style has also changed for the better, too. Due to the fact that most mp3 players have great equalizers built in and great digital audio converters, it makes it easier to convert your favorite CD to mp3 format.

One of the best advantages with the latest mp3 players is that they are smarter and they come with re-programmable firmware that will enable the support of any new music formats and extensions as they come.

If you are mad about getting an mp3 player but you do not have a lot of money to spend on one, there are still some good budget ones that you can purchase.

There are cheap mp3 players available and some of them do not need any drivers, so you can just simply connect them to a removable disk and this will store every different file type.

So there truly is an mp3 player for everyone and you have seen that you can get one for quite a low price. So, there is no excuse now not to get one. Make sure though that you get one that is best suited to your needs.

How You Can Find The Perfect Ipod Speakers

Writen by Paula Korel

So, you have an iPod, but not the speakers. Well, you need to pick up a pair today. The speaker make sharing the music so much easier with your friends. Have that great song you want to have all you friends listen to, but it's a pain to pass it around with just the headphones? Well, that's why iPod has made the speakers, for easy music listening with your friends.

Nowadays, you can throw a party anywhere as long as you have an iPod and a set of iPod speakers. They are so tiny, yet they can boom the bass and shake up the place.

iPod speakers are either portable, which you can carry around, or home models, which you cannot carry around because of some restrictions like, it is bigger and heavier and is therefore not handy, and it is not battery operated and work only when plugged into an electrical outlet.

But, that's why there's so many options for speakers on the iPod. You can get anything from small, easily portable speakers to something big enough to hook up to a home stereo system. It just increases the versatility of the iPod as whole.

The portable models are battery operated and has a size just slightly larger than iPod Nano and some weighs only half an ounce! Although portable iPod speakers offer sound better than most computer speaker, it can't compete with the home only or standalone iPod speakers that can produce louder, crisper, and more booming sound, for these iPod speakers get their power directly from an electical outlet that gives much energy compared to a low voltage battery.

Below are the best in iPod speakers that could rock us out of our seat with their booming sound.

-iBlasting the Room with iBoom iPod speakers

iBoom is the newest iPod speaker from DLO. The iBoom iPod speakers sport an amorphous shape and has a slot in the front which serve as a hub for iPod or iPod mini. The four iPod speakers only need 20 watts per channel to start producing sound. iBoom iPod speakers also has a built-in handle, an AUX in port, and can run either on AC power or a with six "D" batteries. When plugged in to an AC power, the iBoom iPod speakers will charge the cradled iPod. Design wise, iBoom iPod speakers look pretty good with a white iPod cradled on it.

The plus points for iBoom iPod speakers are (1) low wattage consumption but could still produce decent sound, (2) portable and (3) charge an iPod when it is running on A/C power.

- 'What's the new Black?'

For Altec Lansing, the answer is still black.

Altec Lansing's inMotion iM3 iPod speakers come in the usual Apple white and, now, in black. It weighs around 15 to 16 ounces only and is sized just a bit larger than the iPod.

Altec Lansing is known for creating sound system that could produce sounds in different ranges from the highest pitch to the lowest bass. And now that Altec Lansing has speakers for the iPod, expect that these iPod speakers would be of high quality. In fact, these iPod speakers has a class D amplifier to create rich, audible sounds.

It's quite unbelievable that these speakers could last 24 hours from four AA batteries. You can carry these iPod speakers anywhere, and play it on for an all night party even on a place where there's no power outlet, like the soccer field, basketball court, or the lakeside.

The black Altec Lansing iPod speakers has the same price as that of the Apple white version.

- Apple's Hi-Fi Shouts "Party!"

When iPod was released in 2001, the only way you could hear the playing songs is through headphones. There were no Apple-branded iPod speakers then, yet. Third party manufacturers and developers created their own iPod speakers to answer the growing demand for off-headphones music playing.

In 2006, Apple realized that it was time to create one of its own. In February, Apple released the iPod Hi-Fi. Priced at $349, Apple's eye is set on the high-end market.

Hi-Fi iPod speakers, according to Apple, creates a large soundstage and has a wide frequency range. So, Hi-fi iPod speakers are not only portable speakers, they can be the only speaker for a small house or an apartment, replacing the bulky speakers with separate woofer and sub-woofers. With the sound of these Hi-Fi iPod speakers, you can shout "Party!" anytime you want.

Design wise, it looks cool. It bears the traditional Apple white color. It's size is bigger than most portable iPod speakers and is the heaviest, weighs 15 ounces, in the entire line of third party developed iPod speakers

Hi-Fi iPod speakers are powered in two ways, AC or DC (six D-cell batteries), comes with a small, white remote control, and built-in handles to bring it anywhere you go.

So, if you haven't picked yourself up a pair of iPod speakers yet, what are you waiting for? There's so many options that I'm sure there's a pair out there for exactly what your needs are.

How To Download Music Videos To Ipod Plain And Simple

Writen by Brad Newman

If you prefer a more stimulating form of music than the standard audio, you might want to learn how to download music videos to iPod. Unless you have an iPod Nano you have the ability to move video files from your computer to your iPod and view them just as you would online. Learning how to download music videos to iPod is very simple. This article will explain how.

If you are familiar with the iPod process you will be accustomed to the use of Itunes to transfer files from your audio library onto your portable device. In the same way, the first step is importing the relevant movie files from your computer into your Itunes library. You must ensure that the files are in one of two formats, either MP4 or M4V format so they are readable by the iPod. Since most movie files after download are in mpeg, .wmv, or quicktime formats you will need to use a program to transfer the files from those into the appropriate iPod formats BEFORE you move them from Itunes to your iPod. It is preferable to even do this before moving the files from your computer to your Itunes library to avoid complications.

Once you have the files in the appropriate format, simply hook up your iPod to the computer via USB as you would for a normal transfer and drag the movie files from your Itunes library into the iPod folder.

One of the only differences in how to download music videos to iPod is that you will need a greater amount of space due to the increased file size of movies and if the space is not available your transfer will be rejected by the iPod. Most people who know how to download music videos to iPod are dealing with iPods with either 30, 60 or 80 Gigabyte hard drives and so this is usually not a problem.

Now that you have learned how to download music videos to iPod you can show off your favorite clips to friends, keep in touch with the coolest bands and much more!

What Kind Of Processor Should You Get On Your Next Desktop Pc

Writen by Bonnie Archer

If you plan to do basic office work on you new Desktop PC or the usual Internet stuff; surfing and email, any processor will work for you. That is good news because you can buy your new computer for around $299. Considering not too many years back that same computer would have cost you $2500!

But, if you need a Desktop PC to work with graphics, Video, Music, or large databases than you will have to dish out a bit more. But it is well worth it, because if you don't you will spend more time waiting, waiting, waiting, than working.

On your new computer you really need more power then the basic PC provides. AMD Athlon XP or Intel Pentium4 (or which ever pentium we are up to when you read this article) are your best bets for this kind of work. Either will support the most demanding work. Bargain price computer equipment with either kind of chip with fast speeds can be found.

Intel has a newer motherboard chip for its Pentium4 and Celeron. With the higher speed front side bus, data moves more quickly from the processor to the system memory. You can find these boards on Intel's 850 and 845 models. Just check the front side bus speed to make sure you are getting the right one before you buy your computer.

Now keep in mind the computer world is constantly updated. Just be sure to find a new computer with the most memory for your dollar. And if you fall into the category of 'just do the basics' than go with the $299 (or around there) deal.

Finding The Best Small Digital Camera

Writen by Brandon Layne

Digital cameras are getting smaller and smaller every year. People seem to have a fascination for very compact gadgets. Remember how bulky mobile phones used to be? I remember lugging around a bag phone the size of a woman's purse and much heavier.

Now they have models that are as small as a chapstick.

Since digital cameras are one of the most popular portable devices on the market, a lot of people are looking for the smallest digital camera they can find. If you find yourself scouring the internet and your local electronics stores with that goal, just keep in mind that one way to reduce the size of a digital camera is to include fewer features. Don't sacrifice important features just for a smaller size.

After all, what good is a small digital camera if it only has enough memory to store a few shots, or if it is a low-resolution camera that produces grainy photos?

You need to find the right balance. Find the right trade-off between small size and the important features. Let's compare some of the smallest models to illustrate what I mean.

- The Blink by StyleCam is, technically speaking, the smallest digital camera available today, but it only has a resolution of 0.3 megapixel. It's not built for serious photography. It also doesn't have any zoom function to speak of, but at a price of less than $40, it could be considered a good value digital camera.

- Sony's CyberShot DSC-U20 can also compete for the title of the smallest digital camera, but it's loaded with features to boot! It comes with a 2.0 megapixel resolution and expandable memory storage using Sony's memory stick technology.

- Casio's Exilim EX-M2 is probably the best investment when it comes to compact digital cameras. It also comes with a 2.0 megapixel resolution, but it can also play mp3 files and record voice conversations. The only thing going against the Casio Exilim EX-M2 is a price tag of almost $400.

Just because we're looking at the smallest digital cameras doesn't mean that they will also be the cheapest models. It can be expensive to shrink the best features into a tinier package. It also doesn't mean that we should settle for fewer features. Our investment can go a long, long way as long as we exercise a little caution and do a fair amount of research before making our choice of digital camera.

Compile Bat Files Into Native Windows Applications Exe

Writen by Serdar Yegulalp

Since the DOS days, batch files have been one of the most convenient and immediate ways to accomplish certain tasks. Even today it's possible to find some remarkably sophisticated utilities written as command-line batch files.

On the downside, batch files are easily hacked, edited, and reverse-engineered, making them problematic to rely on in certain situations.

I've written before about some ways around this, such as using elevated or deprecated privileges, but one of the more interesting tools I've seen for working with batch files is a program called Quick Batch File Compiler (QBFC).

QBFC takes any command-line batch program and compiles it into an encrypted executable or .EXE file. An .EXE file is much harder to casually reverse-engineer, so this could be a way to conceal a particular batch file's operations from an end user. For instance, if you had a network environment where a batch script was run at logon, and you wanted key information in the script hidden, the script could be converted to an .EXE and protected from prying eyes a lot more easily than a conventional batch file. (.EXE files also run faster than batch files, of course.)

QBFC can create two types of applications: a standard console application, which accepts conventional command-line parameters, or a "ghost" application, which opens no windows and provides no feedback. The latter is best for security or for when you want to perform an install or modification silently. QBFC also lets you set various resources in the .EXE file, such as its description, the company name, version information and even the application icon.

QBFC's shareware version is unrestricted, except that all .EXEs produced by the program flash a brief note at startup. The registered version does not have this limitation.

Email Management

Writen by S. Housley

If you utilize a computer at home or work it is likely that you use email. Email is an electronic message that is sent from one computer to another following a specific protocol (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol or SMTP). As email's popularity has grown so too have the inherent problems with email.

In order to send email you must have the exact spelling of the email address. If there are any typographical errors in the recipient's email address then an unintended recipient could receive the email message. When creating an email address avoid characters that cause confusion, like the number 1 (one) and the letter l (el), computer fonts often cause those two characters to have similar appearances. Try to create an email address that cannot easily be misspelled.

As email has become a popular communication medium the email address should not be too long or complicated, but easily said in a phone message. Choose an email address that is easy for others to remember, as a pen is not always handy.

Unfortunately spam, unsolicited email has become common place, though many countries are taking action to make spamming illegal, these measures will unlikely have any short term effect on your email inbox. Many email clients that are used to read and respond to email messages, include basic filtering options that will sort your email messages into folders, based on rules that you define. Email messages can typically be stored and filtered by sender, subject and contents. There are also a number of 3rd party tools available for limiting the amount of spam received. Spam filters typically use different filtering technologies. When evaluating whether a spam solution fits your needs consider sorting filtered email into a specific mailbox for review prior to deletion. This will prevent any important messages from being unintentionally deleted.

As with almost anything, the best defense is a good offense. It is best not to post your email address in public forums, where spammers can harvest it. If you have a website consider typing out the email address: 'name at domain.com', without using the "@" symbol, as this will prevent the address from being abused by email harvesting bots. Another alternative is to provide a contact form rather than an email address.

Help I Need A New Hdtv Part 1 Of 5

Writen by Jennifer Shatos

Feeling overwhelmed in selecting a new TV? With all the choices these days, you may feel like, "Where do I start?!"

In part 1 of our 5 part article, we discuss the importance (and a quick rule of thumb!) of selecting a screen size appropriate for your space.

---

Selecting the correct size TV is an important part of your purchase decision. Many just choose the biggest TV they can afford, but find out later that uncomfortably large—or perhaps even a tad too small!

If you get a TV that is too large for the space, you will not be able to take the whole picture in. More importantly, you may begin to suffer from eyestrain from being too close. Occasionally, people choose a size thinking it will be "fine for their room", later realizing that they are sitting too far away from the screen. Either way, the overall impact of your viewing experience has been diminished.

A quick and easy solution? A good rule of thumb is divide the distance from your eyes to the front of the TV by 2.5. For example, if I were to watch TV and while sittto get a screen size of 43" (9 feet x 12 inches = 108 inches / 2.5 = 43.2" diagonal screen.) Again, this is just a rule of thumb, but should give you a starting point when shopping for a TV.

Wireless Camera Detector To Protect Your Privacy Anywhere

Writen by Christian Rivard

Carrying a wireless camera detector is almost becoming an indispensable tool for almost anyone.

If you are a regular traveller and spend lots of time in different hotel or motel, if you are renting or even at your office you might consider using a wireless camera detector.

Last year, over 74 million dollars was spent on spy cameras alone. They are everywhere, mostly where they shouldn't be in the first place

Are you being watched without your knowledge?

Today's wireless cameras are so small that it can be hidden in many objects such as smoke alarms, neck ties, glasses, telephone, radios, pens, toys and other common household or office objects.

They are almost impossible to detect with the naked eye because they are incredibly small.

A good wireless camera detector is intended to help consumers ensure they are not being watched in places where they should reasonably expect privacy such as your hotel room, changing room, private office, tanning beds, etc.

How wireless camera detector works?

Wireless camera detector reads the wireless radio waves surveillance cameras transmit and alerts you with a blinking LED light and an audible alarm.

The built-in sensitivity tuner automatically scans variable distances and multiple channels and its advanced circuitry eliminates background noise, minimizing false alarms.

Wireless camera detector can be very small about 3" long and can easily fit in your pocket, handbag or case.

Operating Principle

Most wireless camera detectors are based on the principle of optical augmentation. This refers to the phenomenon where light reflected from a focused optical system, such as a video camera, is reflected along the same path as the incident light.

This means that if a hidden camera is illuminated and viewed with the camera detector, then a strong reflection from the target camera will reveal its position to the user.

You can make discreet checks quickly and effectively for your peace of mind.

A good quality wireless camera detector is really small, will easily fit in your handbag or pocket, will help you protect your privacy by detecting any wireless wiretaps and video cameras secretly installed at your home, office or in public areas.

Christian Rivard is the publisher for http://www.wireless-security-camera-guide.com

After working for several years in the digital photography industry, Christian created a site about digital photography and now is publishing a site about wireless security camera where you can find all the information you need about wireless camera detector.

Ergonomics And Healthy Computing Positioning Your Body For Maximum Comfort At Your Computer

Writen by Roger Williams

Do you remember the old saw about how computers would change our lives for the better? We'd have more time to ourselves and lead healthier, happier lives. The truth is computers do make processing information lightening fast. It's just that today, we have so much more information to process and so many more distractions that the computer, via the Internet, has brought into our lives.

The bottom line? Today we spend more time operating a computer (for fun and for profit) than on any other single pastime save for maybe sleeping. And if you're a heavy computer user like me, even sleep takes a back seat to computer use every now and then.

There are health hazards to continual computer use. Personally I've suffered from back and shoulder pain, eye strain and numbness in my fingers. I've even had to deal with stiff joints and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. None of this was any fun.

But I did learn a few things important enough to pass along to you today. Here are some things you can do right now to reduce or eliminate stress on our body while operating your computer.

The Concept of Neutral Body Positioning

Consider a comfortable working posture with a natural alignment of all your joints from head to toe. This method of neutral positioning helps you reduce the stress and strain on your muscles, tendons, and skeletal system thus reducing the risks of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).

Some Quick Tips - Body Posture

Your hands, wrists, and forearms should all be in a row, straight, and almost parallel to the floor.

Your head and torso should be in-line with your head slightly bent forward, facing forward, and balanced.

Your shoulders should be at ease with your upper arms hanging normally at the sides of your body.

Your elbows should be close to your body and bent between 90 and 110 degrees.

Your feet should be either supported by a footrest or should be relaxing on the floor.

While leaning back or sitting in a vertical position, make sure your lower back is fully supported.

Your hips and thighs should be supported by a well-padded seat.

Your knees and hips should be at almost the same height as your feet and slightly forward.

More Tips - Your Work Environment

Readjust your chair and backrest at regular intervals.

Periodically stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso.

Your keyboard, monitor, and your posture should be on a straight line to avoid any positional discomforts.

Always adjust your chair so you're looking down at the screen, never up.

Your desktop should be at a convenient height with enough space for your equipment and the day's work.

Your chair should give good back support and allow for height adjustment.

Your keyboard and the mouse mat should have a good wrist-rest.

A document holder placed at the height of your monitor will eliminate neck strain.

A Review Of Time Warner Internet

Writen by Morgan Hamilton

What is your occupation? Do you by chance use a computer at all? Ha, that's a good one, I know. You more than likely use a computer on a regular basis. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, most jobs these days require some kind of computer assistance. Even the waitress in your local restaurant probably uses a computer to ring things up. And this doesn't even concern how often you make use of a PC or Mac when relaxing at home.

Who is your Internet service provider and are you satisfied with them? Is your high speed cable service up to snuff? Now days there are a variety of cable services to choose from. You most likely have one in your local town. Then there are the big kids on the block. One of them is Time Warner Internet. This is the largest service provider of Internet access in the country.

If you already have Time Warner Internet you know what I mean? To be more technical, it's called Roadrunner. With a little bit of homework you'll know that Time Warner Internet offers specific packages to their customers. At this time, I have Time Warner Internet, cable television, and phone service. It's a package deal if you will. I like this because it means one convenient monthly payment. Now, if you already have Time Warner Internet, then you probably understand its advantages. Or the individuals who have not joined Time Warner Internet, I'll give you the scoop. I purchased the Roadrunner service in the past. Way back when it all started. Wow, was it an upgrade from dial-up. It's kind of the difference between a Volkswagen beetle and a Porsche 911 turbo. I think you get my point.

I have to admit that I enjoyed the service from day one. Roadrunner actually offered high-quality Internet. Years later I moved and decided to try the local Internet provider. I realized it was a mistake when I got my first bill. It turned out to be a tad pricier than they had originally claimed. Making things worse, my Internet service would randomly throw me off line, all of course at the worst possible time. This got rather irksome to say the least. I had to go back to reliable Time Warner Internet.

If you are seeking reliable and affordable high-speed cable Internet, then maybe it's time you gave Roadrunner a shot. With Time Warner Internet you can get a customized package which specifically fits your needs. Isn't that what it's all about folks? Getting great service and the quality product for your money isn't too much to ask for, in my opinion. Get online and check out the great deals today.

How Do I Fix My Pc Because It Keeps Crashing

Writen by Walter Patrick

Many times I have stared at my computer thinking " How do I fix my pc when it keeps crashing ? "

Unfortunately there is no simple answer ! I used to think this problem was related to buying cheap computers but after buying various laptops and desktops at different price ranges there is one common theme, eventually they will all crash at some stage !

Friends will often think I am a pc expert and will call me asking " How do I fix my pc when it keeps crashing ? " Well start by asking yourself these questions...

Have your children be on the pc ? Kids are great at downloading spyware by mistake ! They will also click on numerous pop up pages and will often change your settings !

Another possible reason your pc keeps crashing is that you have overloaded it ! If your pc only has 64mb RAM memory and you install graphic, gaming and other software the chances are that your system will not be able to cope with your software ! Most PC's now come with at least 512mb RAM so it is worth upgrading if your pc is not at this level.

However the most common reason that your pc keeps crashing is that it has a virus ! Many trojan virus can cause your computer to reboot immediately once all programs have been launched, this can drive you mad and it is not fun as you are helpless !

Best option is to install anti virus software such as the free AVG software or norton anti virus and make sure you only visit trusted websites. If all else fails it is time to reformat your hard drive and wipe your pc clean, this can take hours and you will probably need the data recovery disc that you should have got when you bought the pc.

Why Do I Still Get Viruses

Writen by Darren Miller

Viruses & Anti-Virus Software
------------
Many people have Anti-Virus software installed. Many of the major Anti-Virus software company's now promote what they call "Security Suites" or packages. These Security Suites contain everything from Anti-Virus, Firewall Protection, SPAM and Pop-Up blockers, and Ad-ware protection. Quite often, once the software is installed people find out that things they use to be able to do on the Internet are no longer possible. So what happens is portions or all of the software they purchased to protect their computer get disabled. The result, an ineffective software program that you paid good money for! Worst than that, most people have no idea exactly how the Anti-Virus portion of the package should be configured. Leaving it up to the default configuration to defend their computers. Most of the manuals that come with these software packages seem to be written for those who understand the intricate workings of computers along with every computer acronym ever invented!

Most everyone who owns a computer knows about viruses. Years ago, viruses were more of an annoyance than anything. But as time passed those who develop viruses became more astute at their trade and started developing viruses with malicious intent.

It's amazing that we regularly find computers without any anti-virus protection at all. Typically, those who do not, find out rather quickly how important virus protection is. In addition to the many computers we find without virus protection, we find many computers do not have the anti-virus software configured and running properly to protect them from even the most basic type of infection.

What is a Virus?
------------
A virus is a type of program that can execute on your computer and has the ability to replicate itself. Computer viruses, like biological viruses, spread quickly and in many cases , are quite difficult to stop and destroy. They can attach themselves to many types of files. As these files are transferred between multiple computers each computer along the away becomes infected and has the ability to continue spreading the infection.

What is a Trojan?
------------
A Trojan is software that can perform unauthorized tasks on your computer. More often than not, these tasks are malicious in nature. The biggest difference between a trojan and a virus is that Viruses have the ability to replicate whereas a Trojan typically does not. If your computer becomes infected with a Trojan it can cause;

Damage to your computers software, Operating System, and data;

Your system can become unstable and exhibit unexpected behavior;

The security of your system becomes compromised;

It could lead to the unauthorized access of your computer;

Beware programs and software in pretty packages (for free usually). Remember what happen to the Trojan's of Greek Mythology!

What is Malware?
------------
The word "Malware" is short for "Malicious Software". It refers to any software or programs with malicious intent such as viruses, Trojans, worms, droppers, and kits. Just as a note, not all Malware should be considered a virus but the majority can be considered as such.

What can a Virus do to me?
------------
There are many malicious actions a virus, worm, or general Malware can take. Just a few examples are;

Change or delete important data on your computer such as documents, music and video files, and possibly destroy all data on your computer;

Search for important information such as contact lists and use this information to replicate itself by sending everyone in your contact lists an e-mail with the virus/worm attached;

Spread amongst all your computers in various methods such as e-mail and file sharing;

Disguise itself as a legitimate part of the Operating System - making it very difficult to detect and destroy;

and just about anything else malicious you can think up!

Virus Life Cycle
------------
Creation - In the past it took significant skill to create a virus. However, anyone with even basic skills can create a virus. In fact, there are virus creation labs freely available on the Internet. This can allow anyone to create interesting and potentially malicious code;

Replication - If one of the main goals of the virus developer is the replication or spread of the virus, many viruses will lay dormant and wait for a certain event to take place like a date something similar. This allows the virus to replicate to many systems before it activates;

Activation - Once certain requirements or conditions are met, the virus will activate itself and execute the code that causes damage to your computer. Not all virus cause damage. Non-damaging virus usually do not need activation;

Identification - Once the virus has infected computers and activated themselves in the wild (on your computer), they are isolated and documented and sent to the anti-virus companies;

Recognition - The anti-virus companies then develop the code necessary to detect the virus, update their virus signature patterns, and make them available to their customers. This process can be rather quick or can take days or months;

Destruction - If enough people are protected by anti-virus software that can detect, isolate, and destroy the virus, it can be stopped from spreading;

Based on current information and statistics no virus has yet to be completely eradicated!

How do I Protect my Computer?
------------
The most obvious thing that you can do is install anti-virus software. In fact, this is not so much an option as it is a requirement. That is if you want to be protected and not A) lose everything you have on your computer, B) spread viruses to your friends, family and associates, C) be a productive part of the public network (Internet) community.

In addition, you need to make sure that your anti-virus software is functioning properly;

Make sure that your anti-virus subscription is not out of date. In some cases, if your subscription is out of date, the product ceases to function or can no longer download new virus patterns. Preventing it from detecting the latest viruses;

If you receive an unsolicited piece of e-mail do not open it. Delete the e-mail right away;

Many e-mail clients have the ability to give you a preview of the e-mail before actually opening it. If your e-mail client is configured this way, turn it off. This can actually allow the virus to activate the moment you highlight the e-mail;

If you receive e-mail from a friend or associate that you were not expecting, or one that has an odd subject line like "Subject: The pictures I promised you!" or "The program you requested", contact your fiend and ask them if they actually sent it;

Configure you anti-virus software to check for virus pattern updates on a frequent basis. Checking once a week is probably not good enough. At the very least, configure it to check at least once a day. Our systems check more frequently than that;

Make sure your anti-virus software is configured to perform a scheduled scan of your computer. Many people rely on the "real-time" scanning which is suppose to catch viruses in real-time as you select and open files. This is not 100% accurate and nothing substitutes for a thorough manual scan of "all" your system files

Don't rely on anti-virus software alone. Make sure that you are using some sort of anti ad-ware and spy-ware software. These programs can catch a plethora of malicious software that your anti-virus software may miss.

Conclusion
------------
All it takes is one bad experience with a damaging virus to make you realize how vulnerable you and your computers are. Be diligent in your defense against Malware and your computer / Internet experience will be more enjoyable. The same goes for small and medium sized business. Those who have been down for a day or days as the result of a virus will know exactly what I am talking about.

Computer Optical Sign Language Reading Sensors Needed

Writen by Lance Winslow

We should be able to modify face recognition systems and programs to allow people who have disabilities to be about to use sign language to interact with computer systems. We have voice recognition system, why not sign language recognition systems too.

We should have Computer Optical Sign Language Reading Sensors, as they are now needed. If we are to truly cross the digital divide then lets cross it all the way and take the whole thing to a much higher level. It makes sense doesn't it?

And why not, we have many tools for computer users to allow for maximum accessibility and why not go to the next step? Think of what it could mean for the world too. An astronaut in space who speaks a different language could use signing to say something and the computer could translate it and display it instantly in all languages.

All of a sudden with such systems all people of such handicap would become instantly more valuable to the workplace, society and our over all productivity. Additionally, it does not just level the playing field but it gives us a better chance to learn from those who come from a very unique perspective. Perhaps you might consider all of this in 2006.

Classification Of Computers

Writen by John Gibb

Computers are available in different shapes, sizes and weights, due to these different shapes and sizes they perform different sorts of jobs from one another.

They can also be classified in different ways. All the computers are designed by the qualified computer architectures that design these machines as their requirements.

A computer that is used in a home differs in size and shape from the computer being used in a hospital. Computers act as a server in large buildings, while the computer also differs in size and shape performing its job as a weather forecaster.

A student carrying a laptop with him to his college is different in shape and size from all the computers mentioned above.

Here we are going to introduce different classifications of computers one by one. We will discuss what are in classifications and what job they perform.

Super computer

The biggest in size, the most expensive in price than any other is classified and known as super computer. It can process trillions of instructions in seconds. This computer is not used as a PC in a home neither by a student in a college.

Governments specially use this type of computer for their different calculations and heavy jobs. Different industries also use this huge computer for designing their products.

In most of the Hollywood's movies it is used for animation purposes. This kind of computer is also helpful for forecasting weather reports worldwide.

Mainframes

Another giant in computers after the super computer is Mainframe, which can also process millions of instruction per second and capable of accessing billions of data.

This computer is commonly used in big hospitals, air line reservations companies, and many other huge companies prefer mainframe because of its capability of retrieving data on a huge basis.

This is normally to expensive and out of reach from a salary-based person who wants a computer for his home.

This kind of computer can cost up to thousands of dollars.

Minicomputer

This computer is next in he line but less offers less than mainframe in work and performance. These are the computers, which are mostly preferred by the small type of business personals, colleges, etc.

Personal computers

Almost all the computer users are familiar with the personal computers. They normally know what the personal computer is and what are its functions.

This is the computer mostly preferred by the home users. These computers are lesser in cost than the computers given above and also, small in size; they are also called PCs in short for Personal computers.

This computer is small in size and you can easily arrange it to fit in your single bedroom with its all accommodation. Today this is thought to be the most popular computer in all.

Notebook computers

Having a small size and low weight the notebook is easy to carry to anywhere. A student can take it with him/her to his/her school in his/her bag with his/her book.

This is easy to carry around and preferred by students and business people to meet their assignments and other necessary tasks.

The approach of this computer is also the same as the Personal computer. It can store the same amount of data and having a memory of the same size as that of a personal computer. One can say that it is the replacement of personal desktop computer.

Computer Security And Maintenance At No Cost

Writen by Thea Westra

The following items are security tools that I have loaded on my computer, naturally don't take my word for it. You download all at your own risk of course. I can't guarantee how these will operate on your computer nor your level of computer knowledge to use the tools well.

Windows Defender http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en

Spyware Doctor http://www.download.com/3000-8022_4-10293212.html

AVG anti-virus software http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Adaware spyware software http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Sygate Firewall http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,8132,RSS,RSS,00.asp

Then there are the regular tasks that I perform on a weekly or bi-weekly basis:

Open each of your 3 Spyware/Adware programs (Microsoft. Adaware and SpyDoctor). Run a full scan on each at least once a week.

Open AVG and update plus do a full computer scan every day. It does this automatically at 8am AWST so do it yourself each day if you do not turn on computer before 8am.

Go to Start. Go to Control Panel. Go to Internet Options. Go to General tab. Delete all Cookies. Delete all Temporary files. Do this once a week.

Go to Start. Go to Accessories. Go to System Tools. Go to Disc Clean Up. Perform a full disc clean up. Once a week.

Go to Start. Go to Accessories. Go to System Tools. Go to Disc Defragmenter. Perform a full defrag. Once a week.

Back up all your files/folders onto CD's, external drive or a laptop. Once a month at least, depending on the amount of work you do.

For email security, I do the following:

Set your email to be read in Text Only format by going to Outlook Express, Tools, Options, Read and then check the box that says 'Read all messages in plain text'. If you ever want to see a trusted email in HTML format (i.e. with pretty pictures!) then while any email is open, simply click on View and then click on Message in HTML (or hold down Alt+Shift while keying the letter 'H') and it'll show you the fuller version of that email message.

Go to View, Layout and uncheck box that says Show Preview Pane. This way emails do not open in full until you click them open. You then get to decide which are opened.

Close an email and delete its highlighted line rather than the open email. If you delete an open email, then the next email in the queue will automatically open. It may be one that you don't want!

To confirm an email address of sender, simply right click the email before opening and click on Properties to see the email address. Most times you can pick a weird one before you choose to open it!

Note: Create a system restore point always before downloading anything new or deleting anything old. Do this by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Restore. That way if you ever want to undo anything, you simply go there and do a system restore to the last point that you created.

So far all these tools and actions have done me well. I hope they're of help to one of you.

Portable Technology Getting To Know The Treo

Writen by Simon Canfield

Up until the recent past, those who wanted to take advantage of a mobile phone, data organizer, wireless e-mail with text messaging, web browsing and a digital camera had to have separate units for each. With today's technology comes the Treo – offering all of those features in one small hand-held unit. These pocket-sized marvels even offer a fully functional standard keyboard, enabling users to fulfill all of their communication needs as they would from the PC at work or home. Best of all, it's incredibly easy to use!

The Treo offers a wide range of accessories and software that will help to customize and enhance your hand-held experience. Among these are cradles, cables, cases, belt clips, car kits, headsets, headphones, SD/MMC cards, e-books, games, specialized ring tones and travel software. While these are add-ons, there's also a wide variety of built-in features, which include a To Do List, Memo Pad, Advanced Calculator, CityTime World Clock, desktop synchronization for Windows or Mac and calendar, to name a few.

Starting – in some cases – at $299, this portable communications center is well worth the price, and is compatible with a number of different phone carriers. Utilizing an infrared communications port and a touch-screen with stylus, the Treo holds features that will entice virtually every consumer. The possibilities are practically limitless, when you consider the variety of software options that are available (these, of course, will have to be purchased separately).

Some of the styles of the Treo include the 600 and 650 models – the latter being a bit more advanced in its technology. Prices will vary, depending upon model, features and retailer, but some good sales can be found online, if you have the time to do some research.

Treo 600 – Using a rechargeable lithium ion battery, external battery packs are necessary in order to extend battery life, since the original is built into the device and, therefore, not removable. Upgrades of the internal battery are available – for about $50 – replacing the 1800 mAh battery with a 2000, although the warranty will be voided as a result of such an action. The standard battery offers between five and six hours of talk time, but you can extend the normal life by avoiding wireless activities and playing the audio or video features.

Treo 650 – While the 650 model offers a 32 MB memory, only 23 of it is available to the user, and this model is not upgradeable. An SD/MMC expansion slot is available, however, which may allow you to add more memory or content. An advantage of this model, however, is that it will be available in multiple languages, including English, German, Italian, Spanish and French. The Treo 650 CDMA model is only available in English. This fully operational communications center and handheld computer is among the top of the line in portable communications devices.

Whichever model you prefer, you won't go wrong with the purchase of a Treo. Its compact, lightweight design and comprehensive package is designed to meet the needs of virtually every user, without the inconvenience of bulk or exorbitant cost.

Antiskip Protection On Mp3 Players

Writen by Sergio Camarena

There have been some questions on anti-skip protection on mp3 players due to the fact that some of them publish on the box in its feature list.

You got to see what the storage of each player is to determine if it needs it or not:

- Flash mp3 players have no moving parts at all, does not need nor have anti-skip protection. These will NEVER skip.

- Hard Drive mp3 players like iPods and Creative Zen CAN skip, because if you move the heads too much they cannot read the disk; but as the memory buffer is huge, you would have to shake VERY vigorously for about 10 minutes for the buffer to empty. Only in very extreme situations could this happen (jogging does not count). They mention anti-skip as a 'feature', but it's really not that relevant. Also, in mini-drive players (like iPod-mini) it happens the same, but it would be almost impossible to make them skip, as the parts are much smaller.

- CD/MP3 players CAN skip, and DO need anti-skip protection... as these also have a good memory buffer, it would be rare to hear them skip, although a very hard jogging could make them. It would be advisable to get another type of player.

Generally, you should not worry about this, most mp3 players play perfectly.

Smartcar Memory Stick For Laptop Transfer Data

Writen by Lance Winslow

With the new technology used to transfer information to from your digital camera to your laptop or PC using memory sticks which hold significant amounts of data it appears such technology will be perfect for net-centric cars. Where all the data is stored in a black box situation as many cars now have these features already. If you were in an accident your memory stick would be connected to a USB output. The officer could immediately put the memory stick into his computer and determine fault or in case of a speeding driver, could simply say driver's license and memory stick please, which would denote the data of all the previous 2 hours worth of driving. And there would be instant verification of the radar detector too.

This would also be great because it would have all the recorded data for your fuel consumption data, maintenance and pollution output. The automobile could be a self healing car with a sophisticated black box with all life times data. This would also be good for aircraft, ride on lawn mowers and would make it extremely valuable for hand held diagnostic devices. Wonderful for rent-a-cars, government vehicles on loan to employees to prevent tax payer abuses, teen drivers fro parental control to help reduce insurance costs. The military uses are also significant for deployment, routine maintenance and data could be uploaded via satellite during non-peak net-centric usage periods to the logistical base for notification of over run of maintenance period or extreme conditions such as heat, salt air near oceans or hard driving meaning addtional care during next check up, thus prolonging life and preventing future break downs of fundamental parts whcih could lead to loss of life, loss of mission or loss of physical asset.

Memory chips could be saved for maximum resale value, or used as part of ignition system or recharging

Benefits Of Using Ergonomic Mouse Pads

Writen by Kevin Whales

Ergonomic mouse pads save you from many musculoskeletal disorders related with wrists, palm and shoulder. It also puts an end to the tingling sensation in your fingertips. If you work for longer period of time on computer and do not use ergonomic mouse pads then you may have to keep the hands in an awkward situation for whole of the duration and underside of the palm may experience sharp pains. Ergonomic mouse pads are designed keeping in mind that human body is not designed for typing at the speed of sixty words per minute or using the mouse endlessly.

Ergonomic Mouse Pads Have Far Reaching Consequences

There are many people who go to the office every day for the work and never bother about the consequences of working without considering ergonomics of the office equipments they use. Result of such ignorance is that they work on the computers without having ergonomic keyboard trays or ergonomic mouse pads. Every company should sincerely consider the principles of ergonomics to prevent various health problems of their employees. People believe that it is only physical labor that causes stress on the body. However, when you work for longer period on the computers you may experience same type of stress. Most common places of injury are wrists, palms, elbows, shoulders and back. Most people are not aware about the reason of these injuries and they continue working in the same environment and their conditions keep on deteriorating. You need to know about the latest office technologies like ergonomic mouse pads to cure your diseases that have surfaced only because of working in conditions that are not ergonomically correct?

Designing experts have realized the severity of the situation and are coming up with new ideas. Thanks to the sincere efforts made by the designers, there are several options available in the market today to solve the problem of increasing MSDs. They have designed the ergonomic keyboards that can be divided into two halves. Each half is capable of accommodating each hand with less wrist twisting. However, when it comes to the designing of ergonomic mouse pads, the solutions are much easier. Basic requirement from ergonomic mouse pads is comfortable lifting of wrist and relaxing the stress caused by mouse holding for longer periods. Different manufacturers have devised different techniques. Some ergonomic mouse pads come with memory pad for relaxing the wrists. These memory pads are somewhat like TempurPedic mattresses that you used to watch on television. These wrist friendly pads help in relieving points of pressure and improving the blood pressure.

How To Convert Vhs To Dvd With A Dvd Recorder

Writen by Cole Figgins

When preserving your favorite movies or memories, the standard used to be VHS video tapes. But with the advancement of DVD technology, the advantages of DVDs proved to outweigh those of VCR tapes. Video tapes can wear out over time, becoming bent, damaged or dirty. The cassette casings are vulnerable to damage as well, rendering the tape inside useless. Storage is easier with DVDs since they take up less space than videos. Not to mention the quality of picture and sound is higher on DVDs.

So the question becomes, how do I convert my video tapes to DVDs in order to preserve them for my future enjoyment? There are several options. First, you could use a VHS to DVD conversion service that will do the transfer for you. However, if you have a great deal of videos to convert, over time you'll save money by doing the conversions yourself in the convenience of your home.

The computer savvy among us will use their computer to transfer their videos to DVD. It requires copying the video to a digital file on the computer using an analog converter. The file gets compressed into MPEG-2 format before being burned onto a DVD. This method takes some time, but it does allow you to make changes to the video, like special effects or music, before you burn it to the DVD. Depending on the burning software that you use, you might be able to add a menu or other special features. However, the process can be quite slow because you have to transfer the file twice: first from the video to the computer and then again from the computer to the DVD.

So in order to save time and effort, you can copy the tapes to a DVD without the use of a computer. There are two ways to do this:

  • The first involves buying a DVD recorder that allows input from another source. You simply connect your VCR by cable to the DVD recorder. Then while the video plays, it is also recording. If you choose this option, consider purchasing a video processor called a proc amp or a time base corrector. These devices stabilize and improve the quality of the analog video as it is fed to the DVD recorder and can greatly improve the resulting images that you get on the DVD.
  • The second option is to purchase a combination DVD/VCR recorder. It does the same thing as the previous option without needing to connect any cables. If you are planning to copy a lot of videos, it is worth your time and effort to find out what kind of processing the machine does to the analog signal from the video tape before it converts it to the digital signal that gets recorded in DVD format. You want the best possible result that you can get.

If you do the conversion yourself, always follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure you capture the video appropriately. Make sure that you have cleaned the heads of the VCR between copying videos. Old tapes carry a lot of dust or other particles that can clog up your VCR. And since you are copying directly from the video to the DVD, whatever picture quality issues you have with the video will appear on the DVD. Understand that if you have videos which are recorded at SLP (6 hours of video on a tape) you will not get the same quality of recording onto a DVD as if the video was recorded at SP (2 hours of video on a tape). If you find the quality is not acceptable for you, consider changing your method of converting videos to DVD. However, for many people, the time and energy saved in converting the videos on their own will outweigh any concerns over video quality.

Oh God My Computer Is Dead

Writen by Vinay Rana

One morning you got up as usual and just took your morning coffee as usual. You thought, it is time to check for new e-mails and latest news on your PC (Personal Computer). You went to your room and tried to switch it ON as usual, but hey what's that nothing happens. It just shows some Blah! Blah! booting and after that it again restarts. The process keeps on repeating, till you switch the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) OFF!

You ask yourself what's that, is it a nightmare or reality? In 90% cases it is a reality. Now you are thinking what could be the reason behind this trouble. Suddenly something struck to your mind, you remember an e-mail yesterday, with some strange material attached to it and Jesus! you downloaded it.

So, the problem may be some sort of computer virus or spyware which is already inside your computer. Now, only option you got is to call your local Computer Service Engineer and shed precious dollars; your hard earned money.

Do not worry it is just a imaginative story narrated by me, but it could become a reality in your life if you do not take necessary steps to safeguard your PC from these threats.

It is always better to be proactive than to be defensive later, against these malicious objects.

Always try to use some good anti-virus or good firewall to prevent your computer from the virus attacks.

Try to avoid sharing of floppies with each other, as it may pass on the viruses to other computers. Also try to avoid downloading of attachments from strangers.

Take Care,

How To Increase Your Computer Speed Fast

Writen by Gio Mangano

I'm sure you've come across tons of articles and even suggestions from some of your friends on how to get your computer to work faster. Its really not that hard to increase your internet speed. I'm going to make it real simple for you and you don't need to be a computer geek to make this work. The first thing you need to remember is to never, and I mean absolutely never download programs especially free software without reading the fine print. Most free computer software will bombard your computer with spyware which will eventually bring your internet speed to a screeching halt! If your computer is already infected with spyware you can download the leading spyware remover called ad-aware which will scan your computer and remove spyware and tracking cookies from your computer.

Another way of making your computer and internet connection faster is by clicking on start, then run and typing in msconfig. Go to start tab and remove any program except your antivirus software and any other program which you must have start when windows starts. This tip will increase your computer start up time dramatically!

Step number 3, and I do this almost on a daily basis is to clean up your internet cache. Go to your control panel which you can access from your start button and click on internet options. Go to temporary internet files and clear your history. I would recommend that you also set internet history to a maximum of 2 days. Next step is to delete your temporary internet files including offline content. Last step is to delete cookies. Be careful though because deleting your cookies will also delete useful information from your computer. You can read a how to on cookies here www.howstuffworks.com/cookie.htm.

These steps are the basics you can take which will speed up your internet connection immediately. I would also recommend doing a virus check on your computer on a weekly basis. If you don't have antivirus software, get it! You'll be happy you did. Just one virus can wreak havoc on your computer! Make sure you test your internet speed whether its broadband or dial-up, before and after you take these simple steps so you can compare if these steps you've taken have worked. Taking these basic steps will make you a happy surfer and will restore your faith in the World wide web!

Progressive Scan Dvd Players

Writen by Roger Sanchez

You've probably heard about progressive scan DVD players, but you may not know what exactly they are or why they seem to be the hot item that people want these days. To understand why this is the case, first you need to learn about the different technology that progressive scan DVD players provide. And then you'll need to realize that at the moment, only those who have invested in HDTV or other high performance display screens or projectors will be able to take advantage of the difference.

To start with, let's review the way that traditional motion pictures are created. In fact, the term 'motion picture' is rather misleading because no pictures actually move. Instead, still pictures, also called frames, are played in rapid succession so that the resulting display is changing so quickly and in such small amounts at a time that we perceive it as moving. You may have recreated this illusion in school or on your own by drawing stick figures or other pictures on a stack of paper, then flipped through the paper quickly. The figures looked like they were moving rather jerkily. But if you took the time to draw enough frames and move them quickly enough, you would see much smoother motion, like in cartoons.

Television is recorded in the same type of frames. Then it's broken down to be transmitted in a signal. When the signal is received by your television, it is reassembled in sections, or stripes. These stripes are reassembled in two different sets, from top to bottom and left to right across your television screen. To explain this concept more clearly, imagine window blinds that are partly open. The actual blind pieces are one set of stripes and the space between the stripes represents the second half of stripes. In a TV transmission, the stripes of set one are laid in before the second set is laid in. This is called an interlaced display. Although it sounds like it would take some time, all of this happens in the fraction of a second – 60 of the fields or stripes are displayed per second.

DVD players and DVDs have used this same technology because of the fact that TVs displayed pictures this way. But with the advent of digital and high definition television projectors, display technology has changed, leading the way for DVD technology to change as well. These high performance TVs and projector screens receive and display signals in full progressive frames instead of stripes. And 60 full frames are displayed per second. Meaning even more detail can be included in the same amount of time, resulting in pictures with less flicker or picture distortions. Progressive scan DVD players work by sending DVD signals in the same progressive format.

However, progressive scan DVD players only make a difference if they have both the source material that can be scanned into progressive signals and the display screen that can receive progressive signals. Older DVDs were most likely not recorded with progressive signals. Newer ones will have the capability, though. But as mentioned before, you have to have a television that can receive progressive signals. HDTV televisions can, and so can CRT or LCD monitors.

If you have the right kind of television, a progressive scan DVD player, and a DVD that was produced in the last 5 years or so, you can test to see if you can tell an improvement. Just switch the DVD playing setup from progressive to normal as you watch the film. Look at the outline of things, and the details of the background elements. You may just experience home video with a clarity and sharpness like never before.
